Discus Selection Guide

Discus Selection

What Is the Best Discus?

It Depends on the Thrower.

There’s a common misconception that the most expensive discus or the one with the highest rim weight will automatically result in the farthest throw. That’s simply not true.

For Beginning Throwers

Lower rim weight discuses are ideal.
Why? Because beginners typically don’t have the release speed to generate enough spin on high-rim implements. A low rim weight discus spins slower, but is more stable and easier to control, leading to more consistent throws and better technique development.

The best discus for beginners is usually a low rim weight model, not the highest-end option.

For Advanced Throwers

As technique, strength, and release speed improve, athletes can benefit from higher rim weight discuses. These discuses spin faster, glide farther, and maximize distance potential—but they demand a clean, confident release.

The best discus for advanced throwers typically features a higher rim weight to take advantage of faster rotational speed and a longer flight path.
