Turbo Javelin Guide: Youth Javelin Weights by Age

Turbo Javelin Guide: Youth Javelin Weights by Age

The turbo javelin is how young athletes learn to throw the javelin safely. It teaches real arm action and a real release without a steel tip, and it is the required implement in AAU and USATF youth divisions. This guide covers what a turbo is, which weight your athlete needs by age, and the models we recommend.

Recommendations from Coach Scott Cappos, Big Ten Coach for 25 years at Iowa and Nebraska.

Quick Answer

Ages 8 and under throw a 300g turbo. From 9 to 12, AAU uses a 400g turbo while USATF uses a 250g AeroJav for 9–10 and a 450g Aero for 11–12. At 13 and older, athletes move to regulation 600g and 800g javelins. Always verify with current meet information before you buy.

What Is a Turbo Javelin?

A turbo javelin is a short, light throwing implement with a soft rubber or foam nose instead of a steel tip. The shape rewards the same things a competition javelin rewards: a long pull, an over-the-top arm path, and a point-first release. A turbo that wobbles or lands flat is giving the athlete honest feedback about the throw. That is why it works as a teaching tool from age six up, and why the governing bodies built their youngest divisions around it.

Youth Javelin Weights: AAU vs. USATF

Age Group AAU USATF
8 & Under 300g Turbo 300g Mini
9–10 400g Turbo 250g AeroJav
11–12 400g Turbo 450g Aero
13 & Older 600g / 800g regulation 600g / 800g regulation

The 9–12 divisions are where AAU and USATF differ, so know which meets your athlete will enter before purchasing. Some local associations have additional specifications.

Turbo and Aero Javelins We Carry

Turbo Javelin (USATF & AAU Approved)

The standard youth turbo, approved for both governing bodies. Durable enough for club use and the right first javelin for any athlete 12 and under.

Best for: 8U and AAU 9–12 divisions, club training sets

Spearwerx AeroJav Phantom 250g

The USATF implement for the 9–10 division. Aerodynamic shape with a flexible tip that bridges the gap toward regulation flight.

Spearwerx AeroJav Ghost

The Aero option for USATF athletes moving up through the 11–12 division. Flies closer to a true javelin than any turbo, which makes the eventual transition to the 600g much smoother.
