600g Javelin Selection Guide

The 600g javelin is the standard competition weight for high school girls and collegiate/open women. Choosing the right javelin means matching stiffness, tip type, and distance rating to the athlete’s current throwing distance, technique, and arm speed.

Recommendations from Coach Scott Cappos — Big Ten Coach for 25 years at Iowa and Nebraska.

Quick Answer

Match the javelin to the thrower’s current throwing distance. Softer/more flexible javelins are more forgiving and better for developing athletes. Stiffer javelins return more energy but demand precise technique and high release speed. When in doubt, go one stiffness level softer — a thrower will progress faster with the right implement than by fighting one that’s too stiff.

Understanding Javelin Flexibility & Stiffness

Flexible / Softer

  • Softer alloys or hybrid composites
  • More forgiving of technical errors
  • Easier to throw for developing athletes
  • Higher flex rating, lower distance rating

Best for athletes learning technique or those with less power

Stiff / Less Flexible

  • Carbon fiber or stiffer aluminum blends
  • Returns more energy — longer flight potential
  • Requires precise technique and high arm speed
  • Lower flex rating, higher distance rating

Best for advanced throwers with clean mechanics and high power

What is a flex rating vs. a distance rating?

Flex rating measures how much a javelin bends — higher flex = more flexible, lower flex = stiffer. Distance rating indicates the thrower level the javelin is designed for — higher distance rating = designed for elite throwers, lower = beginners and intermediate.

How do I know which stiffness is right for my athlete?

Start with throwing distance as your guide. Throwers still developing technique should lean toward a softer option even if they are at the upper end of a distance range. A thrower will progress faster with an implement they can control than one they’re fighting.

Brand considerations

Nemeth javelins tend to be more forgiving with stable flight — favored by technically sound throwers. Nordic offers a wide stiffness range for precise matching. Thrower X is ideal for emerging elite throwers and training. Hybrid and carbon models offer the highest performance but demand the most technical precision.

Coaching Insight from Throws Pro

Every thrower is unique. The best javelin for one athlete may not suit another with different technique, speed, or release angle. Distance ranges are a guide, not a rule — if you’re unsure, contact us and we’ll help you find the right match.
