Discus Selection
Discus Selection Guide
The right discus is not the most expensive one or the one with the highest rim weight. It is the one that matches the thrower's release speed, technique, and competition weight class. This guide explains how rim weight affects flight, then points you to the right discus for your athlete.
Recommendations from Coach Scott Cappos, Big Ten Coach for 25 years at Iowa and Nebraska.
What Is the Best Discus? It Depends on the Thrower
There is a common belief that a higher rim weight automatically means a farther throw. That is not true. A low rim weight discus carries its mass closer to the center, so it spins more slowly but stays more stable and forgiving. A high rim weight discus carries mass out at the edge, which stores more rotational energy and flies farther, but only when the athlete generates enough release speed to spin it cleanly.
Developmental throwers throw farther with a lower rim weight because they get more consistent, controlled releases. As technique and release speed improve, a higher rim weight starts to pay off. Match the implement to the athlete, not to the price tag.
Discus Rim Weight Explained
Rim weight is the percentage of the discus's total weight carried in the outer rim. It is the single biggest factor in how a discus flies:
| Rim Weight % | Flight Characteristics | Ideal For |
|---|---|---|
| 60–69% | Slower spin, stable and consistent flight | Developmental throwers |
| 70–79% | Balanced spin rate with good stability | Developing and competitive throwers |
| 80–92% | Faster spin velocity, less forgiving | Advanced and elite competitors |

It Comes Down to Matching the Athlete
Every thrower has a unique technique and release style, so the best discus is not the same for everyone. The reliable approach is to start at a rim weight you can control, build consistent technique, then move up as release speed earns it. All Throws Pro competition discuses meet NFHS and NCAA specifications unless clearly noted.
